Library Director Position

Library Director, Oscar Foss Memorial Library, Barnstead

Duties: The Oscar Foss Memorial Library Board of Trustees is seeking a Library Director who is experienced, enthusiastic, innovative, and very public service oriented. The Director oversees a staff of three part-time employees, a collection of approximately 17,000 books and media items, and an annual budget of just over $127,000.

The Library Director reports to the Board of Trustees and plans, implements, and manages all services to the public, including library operations, personnel selection and supervision, collection development, policy management, annual budget preparation, and fiscal management of the library facility. The candidate should be well-organized; have excellent written and verbal skills; be current with the latest technological resources; and have the ability to establish working relationships with town officials, community leaders and boards, and the general public to provide a community- centered library for the town of Barnstead. Qualifications: Applicants must have strong communication skills, and a minimum of three (3) years of increasingly advanced public library administrative and supervisory experience. An ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science is preferred but consideration will be given to candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and required skills and experience. The successful candidate must demonstrate an exceptional ability to direct a public library in a community which has set a high standard for service.

Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Under the direction of the Board of Library Trustees, the Director is responsible for: the day to day operation and management of the library consistent with current policies and procedures;  assigning responsibilities to all staff members in order to keep the operation running efficiently; design, develop and implement services and programs for all patrons encompassing user, technical, and administrative services; oversee the maintenance, cleanliness and  safety of the physical building.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:  Specific responsibilities of the Library Director include, but are not limited to, the following:

– Under the direction of the Board of Trustees, sets library policies and procedures

– Prepares and files all required State and Town reports

– Records and keeps track of all invoices to be paid

– With direction from the Board of Trustees, develops annual budget and insures funds are spent appropriately

– Acts as the Libraries public relations representative in the community

– Recommends and administers policies on the procurement and processing of all library materials.  Responsible for selection, development, and maintenance of all print and not print materials.

– Schedule staffing to assure adequate daily coverage of hours or operation of the library

– Keep the Board of Trustees current as to local, regional, state and national developments in the library field.

– Supervises ILL ordering through NHAIS system and keeps library profile in NHAIS up to date.

– Maintain all records and library statistics, circulation, patron, materials, etc.

– Insure that all programs, services and building maintenance are closely monitored to insure highest level of service to all library patrons.

– Attends all Board of Trustees meeting, town meetings as required, and Friends meetings and any other library oriented meetings as necessary including supportive library meetings, i.e.  SILC, READS, CHILIS, NHLA, STATE and NHDAB

– Schedule use of library facilities by staff and the public.

– Keep current with new library technologies trends, practices, and philosophies through professional reading, membership in professional organizations, and attendance at conferences.

– Develop short and long range plans for facilities, technology and staffing.

 

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  The following skills and experience are required for this position:

– Computer Literacy:  At a minimum, current skills including, but not limited to:  library circulation systems, windows programs including spreadsheets & word processing plus current internet navigation

– Knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of professional library science and administration

– Ability to analyze library system services in relation to needs of the community leaders, public officials, professional group and the general public

– Ability to analyze problems and recommend solutions quickly

–  Ability to effectively manage, direct, train and control the activities of subordinates

– Excellent oral and written skills

– Must be able to multi task and be detail oriented
– Must have excellent customer relation skills.

 

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:  A Bachelor’s degree plus three years previous library experience including at least one year in a supervisory or administrative capacity is preferred.  Equivalent related experience will be considered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Physical requirements of this position: ability to lift 25 pounds, reach above shoulder height and below knee height, standing for moderate amounts of time and sitting, walking, twisting, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling, crouching and climbing, and hand manipulation including grasping, handling and fingering, see numbers and letters clearly enough to distinguish them on spine labels and for cataloging purposes.
