1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
The Oscar Foss Memorial Library is excited to participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. This program encourages parents and caregivers to provide positive, nurturing early experiences by reading aloud to their children regularly. Through their partnership, Upstart and the 1,000 Books Foundation have designed materials and incentives that help libraries, early childhood centers and other organizations promote the program.
Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to at home during early childhood. The brain develops more rapidly during the first three years of a child’s life than at any other time during the lifespan. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most important, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.
You can register for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten at the library or by emailing the following information to Jerissa@oscarfoss.org:
- Child Name
- Child’s Age
- Parent Name and Library Card Number
- Email or Phone Number
The library will provide the materials needed to participate at no cost to families.
